(2) Interpretation and Examples of the 2nd Law

Let us understand the meaning of the 2nd law of Politics Phenomena with examples.

As explained earlier, political phenomena are fundamentally power phenomena and this is manifested by the changes (modes) in the size of power and cohesion force[Ch.2.9]. Among them, if there is no cohesion force, no matter how great the capacity of political actors, there will be no power. Therefore, this cohesion force, which is also the essence of power phenomenon, is influenced by various factors and is manifested in various aspects.

When the enemy invades, cohesion force is strengthened, but when competing for political positions within the group, cohesion force tends to weaken. This is not only applicable to large political organizations at the national level but also in various scenarios. For instance, when a plane crashes into a snowstorm-blanketed Andes mountain, and survivors have to eat the frozen flesh of the dead with no sign of rescue, they unite and cooperate in an organized manner. Similar phenomena occur even among a group of several friends. Therefore, when competing with other friends, the cohesion force among them strengthens, but it can easily weaken when they need to share the prize after winning a game. This is the reason why party members may unite when facing a crisis of losing an election, but internal disputes can arise when the party becomes the majority.

There are several factors that influence cohesion force, such as homogeneity among members. For example, people with different races and cultures find it difficult to bond, whereas people with similar conditions, such as families, bond easily. However, it is not possible to consider an infinite number of factors that influence cohesion force. To understand political phenomena rationally, it is necessary to simplify and encompass various important factors that influence cohesion force. In other words, it is necessary to optimize concepts. The result is the 2nd law of politics.
